History and Major Accomplishments History and Major Accomplishments A powerful voice against discrimination: In 1992 a group of concerned Central Oregonians joined together to campaign against the statewide Ballot Measure 9, discriminatory legislation against sexual and gender minorities. While the ballot measure was defeated statewide, citizens still saw the need for a local human rights group and Human Dignity Coalition was born. We work for change in your community: We remain committed to responding to the needs of the LGBTQ and allied community while working across issues to strengthen the progressive movement and help us further our own mission: Working in Central Oregon to promote and safeguard human rights.
- The passage of the Bend Equal Rights Ordinance in 2004. This grassroots effort to expand the statewide anti-discrimination law to include protections based on gender identity and sexual orientation was the stepping stone to the statewide legislation that was passed during the 2007 legislative session including statewide anti-discrimination protections and domestic partnerships.
- The start up of the Central Oregon Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Network, networking high school clubs from Bend to Redmond and Madras. These clubs create safe spaces for hundreds of high school students, providing resources, leadership opportunities and friendship for sexual and gender minority youth and their allies.
- The founding of the Central Oregon Coalition for Access, working to organize people with disabilities and their advocates in Bend and Deschutes County. It is our goal to make Central Oregon accessible to all who live in and visit our communities.
Human Dignity Coalition going strong! Working in Central Oregon since 1992, we can look back and see that we have gone from a small fringe group to a well-known and well-respected resource. Thank you for being a part of our community!
